What is cmpct?
Cmpct.io is a free online service that makes your links shorter. It works differently to other link shortening services by giving you enhanced security and protects your privacy. Read on to learn about why our features make us better.
Why use cmpct.io?
Cmpct is the safest link shortener because it doesn’t redirect users to the original page right away, first it presents them with a landing page that shows them where they will end up. Users can add comments and reports to links to let other people know whether it is unsafe.
That means you can always trust a link to cmpct.io, and when you need to share something; cmpct.io has you covered for free.
Install on your mobile device!
Did you know cmpct.io is a progressive web app? That means we can do some of the cool things that a native mobile phone app can do, you can install cmpct.io on your phone to benefit from some of these cool new features.
How long does my data last?
When you generate a link, it will continue to work for at least 180 days, we may later choose to make this permanent. But currently have decided upon half a year. Therefore cmpct.io shouldn't be used for permanent links/redirects but is great for sharing.
What data do you collect?
We only actively collect information that we need to run the service, that includes the following
Website URL: That you submit to generate a short link
Your name: But only if you choose to provide it when adding a comment or report.
Network information: All requests on the internet transmit some data when communicating, this includes information like your IP address and your User Agent (web browser name). We don’t use or store this information.
Do you sell my data?
No, we absolutely don’t sell or give your data away, we only collect information we need to deliver the service. Cmpct.io is privacy first, it is free to use; you don’t pay with your personal information either.
What do you store on my device?
We wanted to deliver a useful 'history' feature on the homepage so you can quickly get back to links you used previously. We store this information on your device (using LocalStorage). You can clear this data whenever you want, and it is never transmitted to our servers.
What analytics do you use?
We use Application Insights to gather some metrics such as page and network performance so we can continue to deliver a reliable service. Using this information we can see why errors are occurring on our website, but we cannot use it to identify you, nor would we want too.
How do you make money?
Cmpct.io is a free service, we don’t run this service to make money therefore we don’t collect and sell your data, or offer premium tiers of service. What you see is what you get, completely free to use.
Can I support the running costs?
Yes, it doesn’t cost much to run cmpct.io, but if you use the service a lot and want to support it to keep it running why not consider checking out our Patreon page?
Any money we collect through Patreon goes towards the running costs of cmpct.io, such as the Web Servers and bandwidth we use.
Is cmpct.io safe?
We built cmpct.io because we saw that scammers swarmed around link shortening websites, this is a shame as the service is actually really useful. So cmpct.io has been built from the ground up to be safe, protecting you from unsafe websites.
Why is cmpct.io safe?
When you generate a link through similar websites like bit.ly you are given a short link, when you visit that link you are immediately redirected to the original website. If the original website is safe then the service works as designed, but scammers may choose to use these services to hide from you where the link will actually go.
We don’t automatically redirect you to the original URL, when using a link from cmpct.io you are always presented with a landing page that tells you where the link will go.
Scammers hate cmpct.io, because not only can you see where the link will go, you can even report a link for being unsafe which means other users are safer too. As a result scammer’s don’t use cmpct.io; preferring to use services where they can trick you much easier.
Socially engineered scam’s are on the rise, just because your colleague or friend sent you a link does not mean it is safe. We always trust content sent to us by somebody we know, but if that other person is compromised you could be putting yourself at risk by trusting inherently. With cmpct.io you will be safer because you actively choose to go to a link.
